BOWEN THERAPY FOR HORSES AND RIDERS

 WHO AM I?

Hi, My name is Natika, I have been working with horses since I was 5 years old. Being around horses for that length of time has taught me a great deal, you cant rely on them to be sound all the time. I have worked with horses, clipped horses and turned out show hacks.

I have loved, owned and ridden horses since the age of five so basically horses are my lifestyle. I had my first thoroughbred a lovely horse named Classic Matara Lad better known as Matey, who taught me a great deal of my riding skills.

I then got my second horse I showed both of them for a few years until Matey got arthritis, he is now keeping mares and foals company.
I wish I knew then what I know now.

After completing a Tafe course, Basic Horse Studies in 1992, I started working with horses on a Stud/agistment property.

It was whilst working in this role that I realised I could be helping horses more, and discovered the Bowen Technique after a family friend used the techniques on me.

In January 1995 I attended a Bowen Technique workshop, thoroughly enjoying all aspects of the course. Upon completion of this workshop I decided I wanted to use these techniques on horses due to the health benefits it could provide.

I first tried a couple of basic techniques on my own horse which had dramatic positive results.

In December 1996 I finished a Bowen Technique course for animals involving techniques used on horses, with Elizabeth Mitchell. I practiced these techniques my own horses, and found more positive results, which inspired me to learn more about using Equine Bowen Therapy.

In 2000 I enrolled in Elizabeth Mitchell's first course, which provided me with a greater understanding of Equine Bowen Therapy. In December 2001, I completed my Level 1 Equine Bowen Therapy and registered my business Equerry Horse Services in May 2002.

In 2003 I completed Level 2 in Equine Bowen Therapy and in January 2006 I completed my course understanding horses industry studies, studying anatomy and physiology, a component required to become qualified Bowen practitioner.

I am now doing what I always wanted to do all those years ago and I love my job!

I have been riding for the past 2 years a Silverdene bred and owned horse by the name of Silverdene Confucious (pictured below)By Calypso Classic out of a Thoroughbred mare. He has the outstanding Calypso Classic temprement that he stamps in all his foals. He was competing Prelim/Novice but unfortunately has been out of work for 5 months due to injury. We are now in walk work for 2 months and then a further couple of weeks with trot 2 min sessions as long as there is no swelling. I have a heavy rehab program to follow. And pictured below on my first ride back after the ligament injury. A month on and he is going fantastic. We are learning walk pirouettes with him so we can make it more exciting for us both. Just walking is not very exciting but a great chance to work with his walk.

What is Bowen Therapy?
Bowen Therapy can be used to fix or reduce pain and discomfort in both Horses and Riders. It is a very gentle but powerful bodywork technique based on the work of the late Tom Bowen.

Bowen Therapy produces a total body response, consequently improving circulation, lymphatic drainage, and assisting in the release of toxins and joint mobility.

This type of therapy can be used on horses of any age, including horses that are being treated by a vet as it assists in the healing and release of toxins from the body.

Bowen Therapy can also be used effectively on nervous horses as the techniques can result in such horses becoming more relaxed.

Please note:  The Bowen Therapy does not replace using a veterinarian but if used in conjunction it can assist in the healing and well being of the horse.
